A procedure that returns a value must have a data type on the line with
the name in both the prototype (pr) and the procedure interface (pi). A
procedure can't return a value unless you specify its data type. In the
example you gave the data type would be 3s 0. You could code the return
statement as "return var1 + var2" without using the result variable.

An excellent document is the RPGIV redbook, available on the IBM web
site. It's clearly written and packed with useful information. It's
designed to teach RPGIV. It's not a reference manual. You can download
it or read it on line.

Subject: Error due to return opcode in subprocedures

Hi,

When I compile the below subprocedure code, I get an error "An operand
must not be specified for a procedure that does not return a value."

Can anyone tell me how to rectify this error. Do I have to mention the
return variable in the Subprocedure Prototype section too.?

Also can someone send me some good document for learning subprocedures
and modules.?
