That is correct.  My question is more about after the read or exfmt, if the 
program do a chain to a subfile, should the value change?  For example:

FMYDSPF    CF   E             WORKSTN INFDS(infdsMYDSPF)
F                                     SFILE(MYSF :SFRR#)
D infdsMYDSPF     DS              
D  dfkey                369    369

C                   exfmt     MYSFCTL
 * let said user pressed F22 ==> dfKey is now x'BA'
C     SFRR#         chain(e)  MYSF      
 * Should above chain to subfile change the value of dfKey?

My testing is showing that the value of dfKey got changed to x'00' after the 
chain to subfile.  I've been using this method to check command key for quite a 
while now and can't recall that ever happen before.

the hex value is in the ds (associated with your dspf) and is only changed
after a read or exfmt.

When program gets control back after user pressed a function key, should the
hex values that represent the function key pressed changed when some way in
the program it does a chain to a subfile record format?
