Hmmm - after discussion with Bruce Vining, it would appear that I was wrong on this. I need to do some testing to understand why previous tests by myself and others indicated that this was the case - but that will be another day when I'm not supposed to be doing my bookkeeping! In the meantime it would appear that VARLEN by itself is the equivalent of coding VARLEN(0) i.e. none of the data is kept with the main record. This would be pretty darn inefficient, so the notion of specifying the length is still a good one. Will post test results here when I have the time to run them. Sorry for the mis-information.
