Is SELECT unique to RPG? Meaning that a programmer in another language might be expected to assume that RPG contains that until proven otherwise. But you know more computer languages than I so maybe I'm off base here. Actually since I've started using SELECT I avoid IF's. I'll use a select for the simplest IF construct. Doing this has encouraged me to think about other possible WHERE clauses than a simple ELSE or OTHER clause. I'm not fanatical about it though. Occasionally I'll slip an If in there. Good points about PSDS, etc. I've seen many experienced programmers with LOTS of years not using them. One who self teaches by reading the IBM manuals and other books might learn different stuff than one who self teaches by looking at code. Sort of like does the resume' question. Does it contain 20 years of experience, or 2 years of experience repeated 10 times? RPG isn't a difficult language. Also, an introduction to the control structures, especially the SELECT statement, would be nice. And the concepts of the INFDS and PSDS, and finally indicators (including the techniques for removing as many as possible). Throw all that together by walking through a basic working example, and I think it would make a good tutorial.
