I stayed out of this thread until this as well.

I agree with Chris and Carel.  Anyone who's worked in a
shop  or written large applications (written before this
technology was avaiable and/or understood) knows that it's
not worth rewriting to implement new technology just for
the sake of using new technology.

Now, new developments and, if possible, updates to existing
code may be feasible (if there is sufficient training,
time, etc).  But even still, blaming RPGers who we label as
"refusing to learn" on the "downfall" of the system is
finger pointing...  We all need to lose, to a point, our
programming egos.  Not everyone has the time in their job
to spend hours a week on a list like this.  They may be
rewriting RPGII code, or Smalltalk.  (LOL!)  

We also have to stop acting like everyone needs to code
like us or it's wrong.  It's like if we see someone doing
something, we look at it as if we were being hired at their
shop the next day and will be forced to maintain it.

Suggestion is one thing, but absolutes are ridiculous.  And
I'll continue to us subroutines where I see fit.  :)
