To give everyone a little perspective, this is part of project that requires building a workfile to query from for reporting purposes. We have a huge history file (over 11 gigs) that would be taxing to query directly, so we build a subset of records into a workfile first. This part of the project is really nothing but a glorified CPYF which takes an entire record from our history file and writes it to this workfile which has an identical record format with the addition of several fields to hold calculated values. I've just decided to modify this piece to start blocking records to try to improve performance. I do an SQL fetch by 100 rows actually, perform calculations on each row and populate the extra workfile fields, and then follow it with a SQL write by 100 rows. It does seem to improve performance a bit but I can't quanitify it yet. On a side note, and this may seem strange, but if I wanted to delete about 500,000 records out of a million record file, is an SQL delete any slower than native DELETE? I want to be able perserve part of the file while "clearing" the other part. rob@xxxxxxxxx Sent by: To: RPG programming on the AS400 / iSeries <rpg400-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx> rpg400-l-bounces@m cc: idrange.com Subject: Re: Can SQL recognize a nested data structure? 08/17/2004 03:03 PM Please respond to RPG programming on the AS400 / iSeries Maybe you are going to need to break down and define the fields individually. Are you really going to need all the fields? For example our item master has several dozen fields. However I can't see too many needs of a multirow fetch where we would need all the fields. And if it's for an interactive program, there's the real estate to consider. Granted, you just shouldn't have to. But to meet a deadline you swallow your lumps, submit a DCR for the future, and move on. I wish the person from the precompiler team on this list would pipe up on this one, or related occasions. We'll try not to treat you in the boorish manner I first treated you when I met you in person.
