Well, you can get away from numbered indicators in a few ways for device
files, it's just that sometimes it seems like more effort than it's worth.

First of all, you can "rename" the numbered indicators in an RPG data
structure.

Secondly, you can use program-to-system-fields in the DDS to define
attributes without indicators.  (See DSPATR in the display DDS manual).

Whatever tweaks your beak.
