I have to back Hans up on this one, sub stringing numbers is ludicrous.

If I want a numeric lot number and I want a sequence number in the back
and a date in the front, I may feel like doing a MOVEL and a MOVE
because it's really readable and saves me having to either:

1. Create a data structure in some other part of the source code, or
2. Do some idiosyncratic numeric->alpha->numeric conversions that were
copied from C or some other non-business-oriented language.

And if that's what I want to do, it's hardly ludicrous.

In fact, you might consider removing words like "ludicrous" from your
vocabulary. It makes it seem like you think you're smarter than those
of us who actually use the language for a living.
