Because of the way in which null field flags are handled, even if you could do this (you can't) the 30 character "chuck" you wrote out would not be identical because the null flags would be lost. If you could give us more information as to _why_ you can't use the external descriptions and simply use a resulting DS (V5R2) to read the record into and then write it from there ... it would be much easier for us to suggest an approach that would work.
