The cursor will always progress Left to Right, then top to bottom. That
means that the cursor would be in column 1, field 1, then column 2, field 1,
then column 1 field 2... on and on...

Not quite following what you are asking.

If you've only got one input capable field.  The cursor should simply move
down the column.

Is this not the case?
