Jon, Will the new %trim support multiple characters? Suppose your variable was like the following: 'A' + x'40004000400040004000' or 'A' + blank + loval + blank + loval... Wouldn't the nesting there be rather intense? Granted, you'd have to be in a chemically altered state to get that, but I wouldn't have to remember is it: mychar = %trim(%trim(myvar):x'00); or mychar = %trim(%trim(myvar:x'00)); or, in other words which came; the string of nulls or the string of blanks? If so, you think there's a chance that a DCR might do any good? Yup - it's not a space <grin> V5R3 will give you relief - you'll be able to specify the character to trim. I can't imagine a DCR would have any effect - I can't think of any other language where trim would remove X'00's - and the new function will allow you to do it anyway.
