an emotional argument is to require facts to back up that argument.

Well, I do this quite a lot (add parms to an existing interface) and have
no
problems with backwards compatibility. If you had a specific example of a
change that is causing consternation in your group, it might be easier to
demonstrate that. Also, asking the concerned members to focus on specifics
rather than merely expressing general uneasiness might help them understand
that they may be worrying about a very small thing indeed.
