I'm sure there are other ways to handle it, but I might try adding a static
variable (i.e. visible at all levels) and using that to determine when the
file should actually be closed.  Many methods from using it as a flag to a
counter.  Add one on each entry, subtract one on each return.  If count hits
zero immediately before the return, close file.. etc. etc.
