Its a bit more specific Simon.

Historically that's true and the Concise Oxford reference I used went on to discuss the difficulty of pronunciation (in Hebrew) being used as a test for nationality which is what your reference focuses on. I did not include that information because the first part of the definition is the modern usage and seemed more germane to our discussion. To wit: The MULT 10000.01 technique is indeed a long-standing formula held to be true (i.e., valid approach) by a party (i.e., RPG programmers). The Concise Oxford definition included a usage example of the word as "must abandon outdated shibboleths" which I think is particularly apropos.

The Shorter Oxford (which is not shorter than the Concise but is shorter than its parent tome) has a definition that is closer to your quoted reference but it also includes "3. A catchword or formula adopted by a party or sect, by which their adherents or followers may be discerned, or those not their followers may be excluded." which is not dissimilar to the reference I used.

It sounds like a secret handshake or the rituals of the various secretive cabals commonly known as Chicken Stranglers (The Simpsons had Homer join the Stone Cutters). "I have to do WHAT with the goat?!?"

I think I'll stop now since this really has little to do with RPG ... :)

Simon Coulter.
