SNDPGMMSG is a good idea.  However it has two drawbacks.
1)  It is often cleared by other messages

to look at the bottom of their screen for a message.  The whole screen 
method is definitely in their face.

The users that I have worked with seem to like the "in progress" messages.... 
Plus they are extremely easy to deploy; one simple CL,RPG,/COPY/Service Program 
and you can put them "any where".  Also with a RTVMSGD routine, extremely 
flexible.
