Technically, figurative constants like *ON are allowed only when there
is a corresponding operand, in which case the value of the figurative
constant depends on the attributes of the corresponding operand. For
example, let's say you have an EVAL statement, "X=*ON;", and X is
defined as 5A. In this context, *ON has a value of '11111'. Within
expressions, there are only a few places where there is a clear
corresponding operand: assignment is one, comparison another.
I suppose you could argue that in a relational statement like DOW or IF,
the corresponding operand is an implicit indicator variable. And
personally, I wouldn't disagree with such an argument. But since there
are lots of other ways to express an infinite loop, we don't see
changing this as a major priority.
