I have been trying to figure out the usefulness of %Elem for some time. In
my Store DS that I gave as an example in my original email I had a DIM of
9999 because it could get up to that amount of elements, but it could also
just be 500. It would be nice if there was a bif that realized I only had
500 elements in the array and didn't process the other couple thousand.

Is something like that coming in a future release?

No, not quite. We're adding an improvement to V5R3 that will help deal with partial arrays, but it won't really help in this particular case. With the new %SUBARR() built-in function, you'll still have to keep track yourself of the number of valid elements.

Cheers! Hans
