I have been trying to figure out the usefulness of %Elem for some time. In
my Store DS that I gave as an example in my original email I had a DIM of
9999 because it could get up to that amount of elements, but it could also
just be 500. It would be nice if there was a bif that realized I only had
500 elements in the array and didn't process the other couple thousand.

Is something like that coming in a future release?

Actually, no. Try this:

total = 0;  // Don't forget this important step!
for x = 1 to %elem(store);
    total = total + store(x).early;
endfor;

And if you're on V5R2, you could code:

total = 0;
for x = 1 to %elem(store);
    total += store(x).early;
endfor;

Cheers! Hans
