Hi Booth -

Another choice is to use %found(filename). By adding the file name in
parenthesis you get the same effect as using a named indicator. Very neat
function that was added. It works with %eof too.

I'm aware of that, but I hate using file names other than on F-specs so I never use %BIF(FILENAME). I use file names only where I have to: UNLOCK/OPEN/CLOSE/etc. I use record names wherever possible. So I'll stick with my named indicators.

Also, getting back to the issue of changing READxx to set %FOUND. If the READxx operation happens to be to the same file as the prior CHAIN/SETLL whose status is still needed, %BIF(FILENAME) still won't work. With named indicators, I can use as many as I need to keep track of the status of the file at various points. (I can't think of an occasion where I've ever actually needed more than one, but the capability is there.)

And named indicators work quite well with
 eval [namedindicator] = not %eof
to be able to have one flag to handle both CHAINs and READxxs.
