I would broaden that stmt further and ask why iSeries programmers dont demand that enhancements be made to ILE's now 10+ year old feature set. Procedure overloading, namespaces and many other capabilities have been proven to work well in languages in the time since ILE was introduced. These features have to be added to ILE for IBM to compete against Microsoft. I am spending time recently moving my WIN32 Visual C++ 6.0 code to C++ .NET. ( talk about compile errors moving code from release to release ! ) Microsoft is moving full speed ahead with something called CLI ( common language infrastructure ). go here and then try the "ecma CLI presentation" link: http://www.ecma-international.org/news/ecma-TG5-PR.htm CLI is not just Microsoft and .NET. It is now an industry standard that addresses issues of how languages can be integrated in an application. How an RPG data struct can be used as a struct in C. Or how a C++ class can be instantiated and its member functions called from within an RPG procedure. ( at least, that is what I think it is all about ) go here and search on "Herb Sutter". He is the Hans of C++ .NET. http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&group=comp.lang.c%2B%2B.m oderated look for the thread "is c++ a dying tongue?" Herb Sutter's posts address how C++ is being changed to fit into the managed world ( a JVM like run time ). The point is that microsoft is doing a lot of work on its version of ILE. And judging by the volume of posts in the thread, there is a lot of interest. IBM's focus is on Java and the JVM. The JVM is in affect the new ILE. My concern with that is that all other languages, RPG, C and C++ cant run in that environment. CLI appears to be better because it does allow all languages to participate. -Steve
