Exactly! Here in the RPG compiler development project, there's no formal coding standard. The only guideline is that within particular modules, we try to maintain the coding style of the original programmer.


The most important thing is consistent indentation. For the few RPG programmers who've never programmed in anything else, this may take some getting used to, and so an official standard may be useful. But in my opinion, it's largely a matter of esthetics. If the code "looks" good, it's easier to read and so easier to maintain.

(If you want some practice in proper indentation, do a bit of Python programming. It's one of the few languages that actually *requires* consistent indentation! ;-)
