Here is the experience I had last November:

"... insisted I remove the READE  and apply Block(*Yes)....  I was
absolutely floored with the difference in performance.  The reasons and
logic are not clear to me, but the difference in performance was from 50+
seconds to sub 2 seconds. "

You're saying that coding READ with an HLL equals comparison in your
loop runs faster than a READE?
