Joep, thanks for the clarification.

So, how do you open files in srvpgms? Let the program or usr opened?

does letting the program open the file, open it on first call to any
procedure in the srvpgm and then leave it open till the end of acvgrp? if
so, that would be acceptable for my purposes in this particular srvpgm (but
not in a couple others).

btw - I'm using nomain.

thanks,

Rick

Ha! Two misunderstandings in one sentence. That is where the nitpickers
join
in, so here I am:

First: it is not the cycle that opens files. All files that are not USROPN
are automatically opened during initialization (even before *INZSR). This
is
also true for service programs.

Second: whenever you create an RPG module, the cycle is included unless you
specify NOMAIN. I do agree that it makes sense to build service programs
with NOMAIN modules, but it is not required. Believe it or not, we do have
service programs that are built with modules with mainlines (no, it was not
my idea and no, I would never have built them that way).
