Ha! Two misunderstandings in one sentence. That is where the nitpickers join
in, so here I am:

First: it is not the cycle that opens files. All files that are not USROPN
are automatically opened during initialization (even before *INZSR). This is
also true for service programs.

Second: whenever you create an RPG module, the cycle is included unless you
specify NOMAIN. I do agree that it makes sense to build service programs
with NOMAIN modules, but it is not required. Believe it or not, we do have
service programs that are built with modules with mainlines (no, it was not
my idea and no, I would never have built them that way).
