Aha! It's a combination of two factors:
1) EXTPGM
2) No parameters defined

Instead of this:
D AA47R001 PR

Try this:
     D AA47R001 PR extpgm('AA47R001')
     D MyParm like(P1USER)

I'm trying to call an external program from a subprocedure using /FREE.
The program I want to call the external program is having trouble
compiling. I'm pretty sure I have it coded wrong since I've never done
anything like this before. Can anyone send me an example of how the code
is supposed to look or what is needed to call an external program with a
parm.

TIA,

Frank

Here's a snippet of what I have so far:

D AA47R001 PR

P PROCEDURE1 B
/FREE

CALLP AA47R001(P1USER);

/END-FREE
P PROCEDURE1 E
