Consider a data structure which overlays a 2-byte character field as multiple data types: - 2-byte character - 5-digit signed integer - 5-digit unsigned integer - 4-digit binary - 3-digit packed - 2-digit zoned And the binary / packed / zone versions could have 0 or more decimal positions. All of them would have the exact same address passed to another routine, and you'd have no way of determing which from the address itself. Doug
