"guessing" the parameter type.

Is it possible to code a procedure to get the type of
any variable given the address of that variable ?
Something like: 

d num           s      3p 0
d str           s     20a 
d vastr         s     50a   varying

callp SetBufferLayout(%addr(num));
callp SetBufferLayout(%addr(str));
callp SetBufferLayout(%addr(vastr));

If want the function Setbuffet to get the type of each
variable and process according to it. Is this somehow
possible ?
