When you install previous release support, what it really does is install the compiler for that release along side your current compiler. When you compile at V5R1 with a current target release, it calls the V5R1 compiler. When you compile at V5R1 but with a *PRV target, it actually runs the V4R5 compiler. Since it knows nothing about /free, you get syntax errors. Doug
