It's not just /free, it's anything not supported on an earlier release of 
the OS.  For example, if READC came out in V5R1 you would not be able to 
compile that down to V4R5.

I am not an expert but I heard that if we need to support earlier release
systems, /FREE will not be supported. It is not backwards compatible with 
prior
releases of OS/400...
