  I've found that it works best to first convert to a date data type, then
convert to character *MDY that is overlaid over a 6 digit numeric field
i.e.

     duedate = %date(numericCYYMMDD:*CYMD);   
     charMMDDYY = %char(duedate:*MDY0);  // that's a zero not an O

(that's what I did at V5R1, I've been told that you can go directly to
numeric at V5R2, but I haven't had it long enough to try that yet)
