You need to use the INDARA keyword in the display file.

Subject: External DS over Display File

I've run into a bug that has me stumped. I am trying to put an externally
defined DS in my program, defined by a display file. I've done this
before, and it's worked fine, but now I'm getting a compile error: "The
Name entry is a reserved word; defaults to blanks." It seems to be caused
by the "changed" indicator in the display file -- the compile listing is
as follows:

D               E DS                  ExtName(MSI710FM)

*---------------------------------------------------------------------------
 * Data structure . . . . . . :

 * External format  . . . . . :  SCRN01 : BPCSPROU/MSI710FM

*---------------------------------------------------------------------------
D *IN49                          1N

  aaaaa

4 20 a 3000001 The Name entry is a reserved word; defaults to blanks.

D CURPOS                         4S 0
. . .

The code for record format SCRN01 in the DDS is:
. . .
A                                      CF24
A                                      CHANGE(49)
A                                      RTNCSRLOC(&CURREC &CURFLD &CURPOS)
A                                      OVERLAY
A            CURPOS         4S 0H
. . .

and the RPG is:
D               E DS                  ExtName(MSI710FM)

As I say -- I've done this before and it's worked fine. If I remove the
changed indicator from the DDS, it works fine, and I can't find *IN49 used
anywhere else in the program (or the display file).

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks very much,
