Rob... To the point of using direct files... Yes the need exists... OS/400 Journal receiver entries each contain the RRN of each modified record. Using this value makes it possible to post the data base changes to another data base, thus replicating. But since reusing deleted records is not guaranteed without RECNO and RECNO cannot exceed the existing extent of the file, INZPFM is the only solution I've been able to come up with. It works but I just don't like the I/O sharing restraints of the solution and want to find an alternative. Ken Slaugh (707) 795-1512 x118 Chouinard & Myhre, Inc. I can't see the use for a direct file anymore. I could see someone wanting to make sure that space was available for a big batch post. Something to stick in the big bag of tricks. I actually did some MAPICS work around 17-18 years ago and from what I remember they liked to preallocate a lot of space. I would start thinking that this file was about to fill, or already was, filled. Contact someone back at the consulting office and they explained the preallocation to me. If you initialized to *DFT instead of *DLT, how do you know how many records you actually do have?
