And in the specific case of CHAIN, in my last post I forgot that it allowed something in the result field too. With the fixed format version already using factor1, factor2, result fiield, op extender, and resulting indicators, there isn't much room to add new stuff. Really, the "new" syntax you must learn for /FREE is not hard. Will some shops avoid it because of FUD? Sure. But they may just as well say you can't use CHAINX either. IMHO, Doug
