at mcpressonline Bob Cozzi and the late Gary Guthrie in the ClubTech Newsletter 
of iseriesnetwork wrote a procedure to convert from alpha to numeric fields 
using an MI instruction. Gary's code was in the newsletter of 31 January 2002. 
Bob's solution was published 30 Junu/July 2002.

You can use that as a wrapper.
