I am using the example you sent, and I knew it would be easier, it always is as 
far as not hard coding things.  I think the field that I was missing was the 
RRN field.  I did not see this field in the other examples I pulled from.

Tracy - if you read the "Trigger Happy" article I referenced in my earlier
post it explains what happened and why.  IBM have _always_ said that you
should use the offsets as the layout of the variable portion is not
guaranteed.  In V5R1 they made a change in the OS that meant that there
could be "gaps" between the variable parts of the buffer layout - it has
always been documented that you should use the offsets - some examples
(often by people who should have known better) failed to heed that advice.
You just got bitten by one of those.

If you read my example you'll see it is _less_ work to do it right since you
use external descriptions to do most of the work.
