Almost a big ouch.  This was what prompted my other question regarding changing 
the TGTRLS default
value for the compilers until we upgrade the prod box to v5r2.

So, for now, I'll *have* to use the %scan.

As for your suggestion that it would be more appropriate to use %check, I 
dunno.  Looking at your
example, I was briefly confused (although others may say there's nothing brief 
about my
confusion!), knowing that CHECK is doing a non-hit type of search.  In other 
words, the %scan
returns "true" (I know, greater than zero, but isn't that sometimes 
synonymous?) if the field I'm
testing is in my list of allowable values.  It's the opposite way with CHECK.  
Maybe if it were
the only test in an IF statement, but when there are multiple tests, I prefer 
to look for all
"positive" or all "negative" results.  Or am I genuinely confused?  ;-)
