Bob,

Stop enhancing the language? I don't think the majority wants that to
happen. What is your goal? If you want a new function buy my service
program? Or do you think that RPG should be killed and programmers forced
to another language?

Much discussion of why this is bound to the os has gone on in the past.
Hopefully that won't come back up. Testing at runtime? I fear that might
not be good for performance.

Exactly my point of a few weeks ago.
IBM has to stop enhancing this language. Its driving me crazy and
preventing
people from using any new features.
The only thing you can depend on is V4R2 or perhaps V4R5 when you're
writing
code, and that's just not good for the language.

My recommendation was/is to George Farr & Co. to eliminate the binding of
RPG IV to the OS/400 Version and Release. And just release a compiler that
can be installed on Version X (whatever it is, just pick one) and then
write
any new features in the compiler to that release. If they need a piece of
code in a future release, then simply test for that at compile and runtime
so that the compiler can still be installed on the old release. Something
like += is NOT release dependant. To me it is absolutely ridiculous to NOT
be able to use that feature under V3R2 (for example).

Bob,
  even this:

  if    A=B;
    B += C*D;
  endif;

Won't work unless you're at V5R2.
Before that, it has to be:

  if    A=B;
    B = B + C*D;
  endif;
