FWIW
a few years ago Gary Guthrie wrote a set of 3 articles for news/400 (now
iSeries news) explaining how to use them and how to set up a service program
to make accessing user indexes much easier. If you have a user id and
password for the iSeries news web site http://www.iseriesnetwork.com/ you
could sign on and search for these articles using the search string "user
index". If you are not familiar with user indexs this is one of the best
places to start learning about them.

User indexes are one of the sexiest things to hit the AS/400 ever. I use
them all the time in place of temporary physical work files because access
time is so much quicker than PFs.
