Thread-topic: Value of Java

I'm sure I just don't get it, but isn't Java being "platform independent" as 
over-rated as the Oakland Raiders?  Maybe someone can give me a basic business 
example of this coming into play, or maybe I just don't see it around the 
iSeries much?
