I am confused.  This eval statement worked for you, doesn't it?
Or is that you do not want a space between them?  If that is the case, you
can use %trim(%char(Number)) for example and that will help you with the spaces.
Actually, %CHAR(NUMBER) already returns a trimmed string. Possibly,
the original poster wants something like:

      EVAL      AlphaNum = %TRIMR(Alpha) + %char(Number)
