You are on the right track looking at edit codes.  All you need to do is
locate an edit code that doesn't suppress zeroes.  The beauty of the edit
code is that it will work for any field sizes, so if your numeric field
changes size in the future you won't have to revisit the code.  That's not
the case for an edit word, which is intimately dependent on knowing the size
of the numeric field you want to edit.
