You should use a logical file compiled with the option MAINT =  *DLY.

Matt,
           The size should not dictate the need for an index (LF) but the
frequency the index will be used should.  If the only place the index is
used is in this program and only when OPNQRYF is used then why waste system
resources maintaining an index that big?  OPNQRYF can be modified to
optimize the building of the temporary index.
