Actually, Han's reply made perfect sense. I believe him when he says the move and movel semantics make it too difficult. It's not so much that they couldn't implement something, just that getting it to fit and work in every case might be problematic. If it sort-of-worked, but had twelve caveats to watch out for, I would rather find another way to get the job done. Also, if it costs a bundle to add this teeny little feature, for gosh sakes skip it. There is a limited budget for work on the RPG compiler. Like it or not. If there is a _reasonable_ work around, I'm for it. In this case, I had two choices -- movel the date into a non VARYING field. Simple. One extra move. --OR-- Change the internal date format of my date variable so that a %char returns the data in the order I need. Also simple. On top of that, after V4R5, %char accepts a second parameter to indicate the desired format. So the %char becomes the preferred solution for me. At 08:32 AM 10/7/02, you wrote:
We've been getting along so well Hans that I hesitate to do this <grin>, but I think there's an important point here (to me, anyway), so I'm going to make it.
