this seems like it should be the ticket, except I don't know how to use it.

what is the syntax for 'pattern' (which is where, i guess, i should put my
compare string with wildcards)?

I've looked in the C runtime guide, and it's less than helpful.

You can do this, and much, much more, with regular expressions.   The
ILE C library has functions called "regcomp", "regexec", "regfree"
for doing this sort of thing.
