I have the prototype right in the same member and do it with compiler directives. It's a method I got from this or some other list some years back. It's worked well for me and I can post an example when I get back to work Monday, if you want to see it.
Everything is extremely simple to implement, maintain, and use. I have yet to have any problems with doing it this way. Even without a change mangement system or sophisticated make utility for dependencies.
