Without resorting to APIs... you can:

1) WRKSBMJOB - will show the state of all jobs you've submitted.
2) WRKJOB jobname, option 1 - will show you the current status of your job
3) DSPLOG JOB(jobname) MSGID(CPF1164) - will display (or print) the job end 
message (CPF1164) if the job has ended.  You can also specify message ID 
CPF1124 to see the job start message.

Resorting to APIs, there is the QUSRJOBI API that let's you retrieve job 
attributes (of any job, not just your current job), among them status.

(By the way, you're probably going to get your hands slapped - 'cause this is a 
question more appropriate for the MIDRANGE-L list!)
