Actually, I still type in 4I0 and then have to stop and think... "okay is that 10 or 20 digits?" Then I change it to 10I0. With all the Java crap being shoved down our throats, I don't think making the RPG declaration of Int similar to other languages would cause a problem. In fact, it would be easier to teach. You'd just teach the 4i0 method and refer to the other method as legacy/compatibilty support. When using integers do we think in terms of absolute digits? I don't.
Consistency with what other languages? DDS? That uses number of digits. Java? Like C, it uses keywords like "int" and "long". REXX, Perl, or Python? Heck, they don't even have variable declarations! No, the current syntax is just something you have to learn and get used to, just like any other language feature, or any feature of any other language. Changing course in mid-stream without a good reason would only add confusion. It really is mainly an issue of "half a dozen of one, six of the other". Cheers! Hans
