Actually, I still type in 4I0 and then have to stop and think... "okay is that 10 or 20 digits?" Then I change it to 10I0. With all the Java crap being shoved down our throats, I don't think making the RPG declaration of Int similar to other languages would cause a problem. In fact, it would be easier to teach. You'd just teach the 4i0 method and refer to the other method as legacy/compatibilty support. When using integers do we think in terms of absolute digits? I don't.
