You can't. system() removes the (any? all?) error messages and simply returns an integer result. That's how system works on other platforms. Welcome to cross-platform, lowest common denominator crap! On the AS/400 it has been extended to set _EXCP_MSGID to the error message ID. If you want proper message control you will have to use an AS/400 method: QCMD or QCAPCMD.
