Another solution is to look at the documentation for the scanner,
wedge, or handheld.  Most scanners can be configured to transmit a
suffix character at the end of the scan such as a carriage return,
field exit, enter.

You may need this in addition, depending on your application.  For
example CHECK(ER) requires a field exit or the field to be completely
filled in order to work.  This might not work if your application
scans multi-length barcodes.
